POLICY & ADVOCACY
At People’s Housing+ we believe that structural problems require structural solutions. Our team works closely with partners at the local, state, and national level to develop and advocate for policy changes that support low and moderate income New Orleanians.
PH+ was instrumental in the national policy effort to create the Neighborhood Homes Investment Act a federal affordable homeownership tax credit that will provide a new stream of equity investment for developing and renovating family housing (from 1 to 4 units) in distressed urban, suburban, and rural neighborhoods.
Our CEO serves on the Enterprise Community Leadership Council and contributes to the Steering Committee for the See Change Initiative a catalyst for closing the wealth gap for Blacks, Hispanics, and Latinos in the Greater New Orleans Region. The organization does so by focusing on three pathways to wealth-building: homeownership, business ownership/entrepreneurship, and income and wages. Our staff also serve on the Greater New Orleans Housing Alliance’s Community Development Finance and Homeownership committees, as well as on the leadership board of Housing Nola.
OUR CURRENT POLICY PRIORITIES INCLUDE:
LAND USE POLICY
Allowing small multi-family development & ADUs by-right, eliminating parking minimums, improving the adjudicated property process, and inclusionary zoning for homeownership
TENANT’S RIGHTS
Eviction protections & diversion programs, right to counsel; rental registry program, expanded funding for acceptance of housing choice vouchers, community opportunity to purchase, and dignity in housing bill
HOMEOWNER ADVOCACY
Insurance reform, assessment & appraisal reform, and neighborhood homes tax credit
Despite these efforts, the city still faces significant challenges in providing affordable housing for all residents, particularly in neighborhoods that have experienced rapid gentrification and rising property values. Continuing advocacy and policy initiatives will be crucial in ensuring that all residents have access to safe, affordable housing in New Orleans.
